IN UKRAINE (W UKRAINIE) by Piotr Pawlus and Tomasz Wolski is celebrating its world premiere in the Forum section at the Berlin International Film Festival 2023.
Without showing the war but its consequences, IN UKRAINE is a journey deep into the shelled-out state, in the hope of capturing “the new normal” of the Ukrainian people.
SYNOPSIS
As Western World struggled to understand the atrocities of the Russian army in Ukraine, Euro- pean citizens joined forces to welcome nearly 8 million refugees fleeing the country. What hap- pened to those who stayed or who returned home? Can home even be called “home” under these circumstances? Filmmakers Piotr Pawlus and Tomasz Wolski depart on a challenging mission to show, rather than tell, what is going on in shelled-out cities and burnt-down villages.
Tomasz Wolski graduated from Wajda School and holds a PhD from the Lodz Film School. He worked as a director, scriptwriter, editor and DoP for over a dozen films awarded worldwide. His latest feature-length documentary „1970“ screened at more than 50 international festivals and won numerous awards, including Visions du Réel, Krakow Film Festival, Zagrebdox, Festival Film Dokumenter, and Batumi International Art House Film Festival. He edited “Babi Yar. Context” and “The Kiev Trial” by Sergei Loznitsa, “A Diary of a Journey” and “21xNY” by Piotr Stasik, and “Horse Riders” by Anna Gawlita. He is a member of the European Film Academy.
Piotr Pawlus graduated in Cinematography and Photography from the Krzysztof Kieślowski Film School. He is a graduate of the Krakow School of Screenwriting and winner of the school’s treatment award for the feature film “Dreamer”. He creates documentaries, feature films and commercials in Poland and abroad. His work has been awarded at numerous international film festivals, including Gdynia Film Festival, Film and Music Festival Küstendorf, Koszalin Film Debut Festival „Youth and Film“, Poland, 11 Go Short – Short IFF, Netherlands.
IN UKRAINE is produced by Anna Gawlita of KIJORA FILM. She has been awarded Best Producer at Era New Horizons International Film Festival and Krakow Film Festival.
