The tragicomedy is the debut feature of the acclaimed Romanian scriptwriter Bogdan Mureșanu completing the story of his Oscar® 2020 short-listed and European Film Academy awarded short film “The Christmas Gift”.

THE NEW YEAR THAT NEVER CAME is a riveting tale set during the Romanian Revolution in 1989. An ensemble of over 50 key role actors are featured in interconnected stories about the search of normality, safety, love, freedom and meaning – all happening in one single day. Reflecting on the deconstruction of a dictatorial regime, THE NEW YEAR THAT NEVER CAME is a thought-provoking film and current meditation on the rise of authoritarian voices in many countries.

SYNOPSIS

On December 20th, 1989, Romania stands on the brink of revolution. The streets are alive with demonstrations, students mock the regime through art, and New Year’s shows glorify Ceausescu. Yet, behind closed doors, families grapple with personal conflicts and the omnipresent Secret Police.
Six seemingly disconnected lives intersect in unexpected ways. As tensions reach a boiling point, an explosive moment brings them together, culminating in the dramatic fall of Ceausescu and the communist regime.

Romanian award-winning writer Bogdan Mureșanu, born 1974, has shifted from literature and advertising to cinema with equal success, both as a director and as a scriptwriter. Since his debut in 2008 with the script for “The Human Torch” (Best Short in TIFF scriptwriting competition), his work has covered animations, documentaries, fiction films and TV series. He is a member of the European Film Academy and best known as the scriptwriter of „Opinci“ („Sandals“) – a short animation which won numerous international awards – and of „The Christmas Gift“ – a short film short-listed for the Academy Awards® in 2020, awarded with the European Film Academy Award for Best Short Film 2020 and selected for 200 festivals with a total of 72 awards (including Grand Prix at Clermont Ferrand International Film Festival, France; Best European Short Film at Alcine, European Film Festival, Spain and three awards at Tampere Film Festival, Finland). His short art documentary „Negruzzi 14“ was show-cased at the National Museum of Contemporary Art in 2016.

The main cast features Adrian Văncică, Iulian Postelnicu, Emilia Dobrin, Nicoleta Hâncu, Andrei Miercure, Mihai Călin.
