VANILLA (Vainilla) by writer-director Mayra Hermosillo is world premiering at Giornate degli Autori at the Venice International Film Festival 2025. VANILLA is the first directorial work of acclaimed Mexican film and TV actress (Netflix’s Narcos: Mexico; Amat Escalante’s Lost in the Night – Cannes Premiere 2023) and a deeply sensitive exploration of identity, family, and the experience of womanhood.

Based on personal experiences and set in an non-traditional all-female, multi-generational household, VANILLA is about the difficult process of breaking free from the limitations of inherited social expectations of women. It is an intimate study of how our circumstances and the choices we make define who we are and the courage needed to face their consequences.

SYNOPSIS
In late 1980s Mexico, eight-year-old Roberta watches her family of seven women fight to save their home from mounting debt, a struggle that reshapes how she sees herself and those around her.

Mayra Hermosillo, originally from Torreón, Coahuila, moved to Mexico City, where she studied acting in various workshops and worked in the subdirection of the International Cervantino Festival, coordinating the planning of artists. As an actress, she has worked with director Alejandra Márquez Abella and directors such as Alejandro Guzmán, Iván Ávila, Luis Estrada, Amat Escalante, Humberto Hinojosa, Rodrigo Plá, Michel Grau, among others. Narcos: Mexico was the first series in which she participated. In 2018, she wrote and co-directed her first short film, En la piel de Lucía, which was an official selection at the Guadalajara International Film Festival and at festivals in the United States, Canada, and Cuba, receiving awards in France and Spain. In 2021, she was a beneficiary of the FOCINE Post-Production Support Program for her second short film, Me quedo aquí. Her first feature film script, VANILLA, has been selected by the National Fund for Culture and the Arts to be developed during the writing process, followed by being a beneficiary of FOCINE for the production which started in 2023.

VANILLA features Aurora Dávila, María Castellá, Natalia Plascencia, Paloma Petra, Rosy Rojas, Fernanda Baca, and Lola Ochoa amongst others.

VANILLA is produced by Redrum and Huasteca Casa Cinematografica, and it’s supported by FOCINE, FONCA and GUADALAJARA CTT.

VANILLA won various industry awards and work in progress programmes, including Festival de Morelia, GLAFF, Ventana Sur and Cinelatino Toulouse.
